Will Spanish Speaking Prospects Say "Si!" to You With Their Wallets & Purses Open?
From the desk of: Jennifer Brinckmann
Dear eCommerce & Internet Marketing Professionals,
Imagine someone hurriedly pressing the following written message into your hand:
"Voy a compartir contigo el motivo por el cual los sitios web que traducen sus páginas con traductores gratis no logran hacer ventas en otros idiomas. Es bastante obvio, pero mucha gente no piensa en ello. Esta información te va a dar una gran ventaja sobre tu competencia pero sólo te lo digo si me prometes mantenerlo en secreto. ¿Sale?"
It would look strange. Confusing. You might assume it's written in another language, but unless you knew Spanish, you would only be guessing as to the language and the true meaning of the message.
Your curiosity is piqued! You would be interested in what the message said, wouldn't you?
But what could you do? None of the words make sense.
Obviously, you would need to translate the message. And you might simply go online to a popular website for translation, enter the above text, and quickly discover that those words in Spanish might mean something like this...
“I am going to share with you the motive by which the websites that translate their pages with translators free fail to do sales in other languages. Is quite obvious, but many people does not think about it. This information is going to give you a great advantage on your competence but only I tell it you if you promise me to maintain it in secret. Leaves?”
Now, how does this sound?
Better?
Yes, you can understand many of the words now, but the real question is this…
Does it really make any sense?
Would you buy a product from an online store or eCommerce merchant with product descriptions that read and sound like gibberish?
Of course you wouldn't. Neither would I and neither will a Spanish speaking prospect arriving at your strictly English speaking eCommerce store.
By the way, the true meaning of our Spanish message is actually...
"I am about to tell you the reason why websites, which translate their pages using a free translation service will never make any sales in another language. It’s quite obvious, but many people don’t think about it. This information is going to give you a great advantage over your competition but I will only tell you if you promise to keep the secret. Agreed?"
Now it all makes sense!
Now you know exactly (and with accuracy) what the words mean and you can enjoy them, act on them, or just let them go entirely.
Now you've gotten to the truth of the message.
Relax. Breathe. Smile. Ahhhhhh...
Before we go any further, lets make certain we're all on the same page here:
If the message is not clear, the customer won’t buy; and for your Spanish audience, that means reading the message in Spanish.
The Internet is a global medium, so why limit yourself as language becomes more relevant.
Your Spanish eCommerce store can be as profitable as your English eCommerce store, or even more so, when done correctly and executed properly.
There are 60.68 million potential prospects waiting for you to reach out to them as of October, 2004 (and in seven additional years that number has likely risen significantly).
But whatever you do, if you only learn one thing from my letter, please, please, don't make the costly mistake of using popular free online translation services or translation machines to communicate with your Spanish speaking prospects.
You will end up being laughed at and disrespected by the very group of people you're seeking to create relationships with and do business with.
Word will get around fast.
Your reputation, your business, and your bottom line profitability will suffer greatly as a result.
When you translate your existing or new eCommerce stores for Spanish speaking markets, do it in a way so your Spanish consuming prospects can consume and have your important messages delivered in easy to read and understand conversational Spanish.
Remember our 60.68 million potential prospects who prefer speaking Spanish? Of course you do.
There are 60.68 Hispanics surfing the Internet just like you and I both do. Plus more and more and more are getting online every day.
Now ask yourself what small percentage of those 121.36 million new eyeballs do you really need to capture in order to double your store revenues this quarter or next? Is that number 1%, 2%, 5% or more? That's for you to answer.
What I'm saying is that when you're communicating with a very small segment of a big population of people, you have one opportunity to start the conversation out on the right foot.
And, guess what?
Not very many Internet Marketers (across the wide range of IM categories) are profiting from this Spanish language gap in the marketplace yet.
Some of the online information marketing communities have been the early adopters, however those doing business in the eCommerce category have yet to even scratch the surface of the ultra lucrative Spanish speaking customer base.
You can still be a true pioneer using tried and true eCommerce store strategies and likely double your business quickly based on how smart you're willing to work.
Imagine crossing bridges or even oceans and entering whole new worlds full of people hungry for the exact products and services you market in your online stores.
Now remember how you felt when you tried reading the Spanish message we shared earlier.
Would you be able act on the words in that message even though you did not understand any of them? No. How could you?
The same exact thing happens right now to most Spanish speaking visitors who arrive at your online stores and web sites.
They're saying "No" and going away quickly because the language is not speaking to their listening! And POOF! There goes your sale -- and even worse your prospect likely vanishes forever too.
Then what happens when your eager Spanish speaking prospects don't ever arrive at your site in the first place?
If your stores detailed product descriptions are not optimized for the proper Spanish keywords your potential customers are actually searching for and using, all those new eyeballs will likely not find you or your products anyway.

The opportunity is there. And it's real. Can you really afford not to translate your successful eCommerce real estate properties?
Software companies like Microsoft, Quark and Corel know it. Other multi-billion dollar corporations pay my team and I every day to turn their English marketing pieces into Spanish translations destined for all corners of the online and off line world.
Authors like Robert Kiyosaki (Rich Dad, Poor Dad), Mark Victor Hansen (Chicken Soup for the Soul) Spencer Johnson (Who took my cheese) and thousands more already know it.
So why is it so few Internet Marketers and eCommerce store owners have their websites and online storefronts professionally translated for the Spanish speaking customer?
After all the years of experience I have in English to Spanish translations here's where I've found many entrepreneurs and online marketers routinely get stuck.
In fact the 3 sticking points listed below are the ones which come up the most.
Sticking Point #1 - First and foremost the common thinking is about not having any employee(s) who can handle customer service in Spanish or not wanting to hire anyone period.
Here you have 2 easy options and hiring someone is NOT one of them:
Option 1 - Get a Spanish speaking Virtual Assistant who can handle customer service issues one-on-one and you only pay for the actual time you use the Spanish speaking VA services.
Option 2 - Use an automatic and easy monthly maintenance/customer support service like the one we provide for our clients and we will handle the support details for you quickly and professionally.
A few years ago, I would have strongly advised against translating your site to Spanish if you had zero bilingual employees in your business.
Now with fast and easy access to highly trained and qualified independent professionals via phone, e-mail and text there is no reason your Spanish speaking customer support needs ever have to be left unmet.
Sticking Point #2 - How to determine if certain products or even services would sell well to the Spanish speaking population covers the next sticking point nicely.
Basically, if you offer a service such as copywriting, then going for the Spanish translation may not be a viable choice. You would most likely need to raise your copywriting fees dramatically in order to have your work rendered accurately and conversationally in Spanish.
Quality translation services is not an in-expensive investment.
Better choices may be made by looking for and offering products and services with longevity in the marketplace. That way the translation investment you make has the best opportunity to continue to work on your behalf now and in the future.
Items such as software, e-Books, e-Zines, instruction manuals, “how to” books, audios, videos, product descriptions, and services such as web hosting, e-mail autoresponders, and many others can be translated and delivered in Spanish, marketed well and sold quite effectively.
eCommerce store owners can easily take their best sellers and determine if there is a fit for the Spanish speaking buyer. Simple tracking and analysis is the usual methodology.
Sticking Point #3 - All in all our last sticking point comes down to simply not knowing if making the decision to have your eCommerce stores and web sites translated for Spanish speaking prospects is a good business decision or not.
Here is something you'll want to breathe in deeply and take to heart...
If your eCommerce products and online offers are not currently converting (selling) in the English language, changing everything over for Spanish speaking prospects will give you more of what you are already getting.
Spanish translation is not a "magic bullet" solution for higher conversion rates and new sales dollars showing up on your balance sheets. If you are not already successful selling your products and services online, go get successful at selling your products and services online first.
Think about it. Spanish speaking buyers want the same things English speaking buyers want when they make buying decisions.
In many aspects our Spanish speaking friends behave and do business on the Internet much the same as you and I do.
Personally I respond to offers that speak to my listening and come from what appear to be trusted websites with good reputations -- and I appreciate my friends and contacts opinions and input when I shop online or off.
This is also not for you if you are an affiliate marketer or someone doing referral selling using third party content and promotion materials.
You must own the content outright or have full documented signed permission for any English to Spanish translation work to be done on content owned by any other entity or entities.
We are not in the business of piracy or plagiarism in any language nor at any price.
Now here is something to separate the professionals from the amateurs.
How serious about owning, running, maintaining and building profitable eCommerce spaces or online storefronts and web sites for Spanish speaking customers and clients are you?
How serious are you really?
If this is yet another idea you're entertaining or appears as a passing fancy to you then my advice is to get serious.
If your online business is some kind of a hobby let me wish you "Good Luck" and we can part company as friends now.
Agreed?
As a professional English to Spanish Translation Specialist who is immersed in the industry through my own company, Mexican Spanish Translations, the people I do business with on a regular and long term basis are serious.
They are deadly serious about the marketing and selling communications put on the table for prospects who speak another language (in this case Spanish).
Why? Because the translations generate more revenue over time than the initial English to Spanish translation investment costs up front.
If missing out on this conversation and the revenues available in the Spanish speaking marketplaces are relevant to your long term success, the time to take the next step forward is now.
When you are serious, here is exactly what to do next...
